Evaluating the Effects of Atmospheric Stability on the Dispersion of PM10 from a Near-Source, Near-Surface, Point Source Aerosol Generator

چکیده
An experiment was performed in which the dispersion of an aerosol, generated from a point source using aviation smoke oil, was measured under weakly unstable and neutral conditions at the mouth of Red Butte Canyon in Utah. The objectives of this experiment were to determine how atmospheric stability affects near-ground dispersion of passive scalars and to further understand the underlying physics contributing to atmospheric dispersion. Concentration values at discrete heights for the two cases described above were measured, and then a normalizing technique was applied because a limited number of DustTraks was available for the experiment. Dispersion and turbulence statistics are presented at a downstream distance of 450 cm from the source. The concentration fluxes for both cases indicate that atmospheric stability has a definitive influence on the dispersion of aerosols from near-surface sources. Instability increased the vertical transport of particles (i.e., larger flux measurements) which can be seen in the correlations between the vertical velocity and temperature fluctuations. Spectral analysis revealed that the largest contributions to vertical fluxes came from relatively low frequency eddies.

Investigation of forward directivity effects on design spectra of industrial complexes near Assaluyeh fault
Recorded ground motions in near fault region have completely distinct nature from others that recorded in far field of the fault. Near source outcomes cause much of the seismic energy to appear in a single large and long period pulse at the beginning of the velocity record. Assaluyeh complex is located near the reverse Assaluyeh fault that is a segment of Mountain Front Fault. This complex cont...

In issues related to air pollution, the thickness of the boundary layer is known as the depth of the mixed layer because the pollution on the ground surface is mixed in this entire layer through turbulence processes. In most cases, the boundary of the area is clearly visible on big industrial cities. The depth of the mixed layer has an important effect in the concentration of air pollution whic...
متن کاملSimulation of entrainment near a density stratified layer: Laboratory experiment and LIDAR observation
In this paper a simple qualitative model of the growth of a mixed layer adjacent to a uniform layer with a stably stratified layer is presented. The depth variations of mixed layer can be estimated from direct measurements. The Entrainment of a stably stratified layer into a turbulent mixed layer in a confined region was studied in laboratory for different Richardson numbers. The internal waves...
متن کاملGeostatistical assessment of Pb and the related soil physical and chemical properties in near-surface soil around Sepahanshahr, Isfahan
This paper presents a survey on soil Pb concentration around Sepahanshahr town located in vicinity of Isfahan. Due to the lack of regulation and environmental education and awareness, Sepahanshahr is now a rapid growing residential area suffering from the considerable consequences of poorly regulated mining activities operating in its vicinity. The aim of this study is to explore the spatial st...

Nowadays air pollution in large cities such as Tehran have dramatic effects on public health, hence study of the way air pollutions varies with meteorological parameters appears to be important. One important aspect of sustainability of large cities such as Tehran, is controlling the emissions of pollutants as the meteorological (climatic) conditions are becoming more acute in terms of air poll...
